Leg #1: Europe and Morocco
June - October 2024

The first part of our Europe adventure was a month in Italy in June. We spent the first half in Southern Italy in Naples, the Amalfi Coast and Sicily with Alex's parents, and his sister, brother-in-law and their kids. We celebrated Alex's parents 50th wedding anniversary. The second part of Italy was in the North in Milan, Lake Como, Parma, and Cinque Terre. Here we celebrated Maria-Paz's dad's 70th birthday. And her brother and his family joined us.

We came back to Arizona for a few weeks then headed to Spain in July where we rented an apartment in a town called Alicante, on the Costa Blanca. We spent the majority of our 90 days in Europe living in Alicante. We shopped at the local baker, butcher, and market. And became members of the local tennis club, where we learned how to play padel. Lia and Mateo took some beach volleyball lessons, they got PADI open water diver certifications. We visited nearby towns of Altea, Denia, Javea, Villajoyosa, and bigger Spanish cities like Valencia and Madrid. Last year, as a family, we had visited Cordoba, Toledo, Sevilla, Cadiz, Malaga and Granada.

We also used Alicante as a 'home base' and took trips to Paris during the Olympics and learned how to make croissants, to Vienna where we learned how to make schnitzel and all about the Habsburg Dynasty, and Berlin to learn about the Cold War and World War II. Toward the end of our stay we took a trip to Morocco (Marrakech is a short 1hr 45 minute flight from Alicante) and traveled to Marrakech, Casablanca, Fes, Merzourga, and Skoura - and we rode camels and stayed in tents in the Sahara desert.

We took a 16-day road trip throughout the UK and Ireland visiting London, Edinburgh, the Scottish Highlands Inverness and Isle of Skye), Dublin, and Ireland (visiting the Ring of Kerry and Dingle Peninsula).

Leg #2: South America Family, Service, and Adventure
December 2024 - March 2025
After a short visit back to our home in Arizona, we plan to chase the summer weather down to South America. First, we will visit Maria-Paz's extended family in Valparaiso. Then we will stay at an adventure lodge in the Chilean Patagonia near Torres del Paine, and spend our days hiking. Next, we will cruise the Chiloe, Puerto Montt channels with Chilean family.
We will fly over to Ecuador and spend a week with Alex's sister, husband and their kids - on an expedition boat navigating the Galapagos where we will also scuba dive and snorkel to see nearly extinct creatures!

We will spend Christmas and New Year's back at our home in Phoenix after which we will travel to Peru. In Peru we are spending two weeks up north learning about the Chimu and Moche pre-Incan civilizations. And then a week in northern Peru living on the beach and learning to surf as a family. Then a week in the Amazon Jungle on a river cruise. We went to the Amazon jungle in 2019, and our kids have been asking to go back ever since. Lastly, we will be involved with two immersion trips to Flores de Villa in Peru where Peruvian Partners, a nonprofit we are involved with does their work.

Finishing our trip in Uruguay, Punta del Este and Buenos Aires spending time with extended family on Maria-Paz's mother's side.

Leg #3: Switzerland & Ancient Civilizations
April - June 2025
For the last leg of our trip we plan to be in Greece for a month. We will visit Athens for a few days, take a road trip around the Peloponnes, visit where Alex's great grandfather is from - Xylokastro, and spend time on small off the beaten path Greek islands. We are doing a 10-day road trip around Switzerland. And traveling around Turkey for a couple weeks, along with a few days in Cairo, Egypt. Our goal is to learn about ancient civilizations.
Home Sweet Home
Upon returning to the States, we look forward to attending our annual Family Camp in Upstate New York alongside many of our friends from Arizona. And then a trip to the beach with Maria-Paz's friends from growing up in Washington DC.

We are looking forward to being home and spending time with family and friends in the months of November and March, and finally back to normal life by July 2025.
